Swiss native Mariette Scheidegger was born into a Jehovah's Witness family. Her path was marked by great internal struggles with "the truth" since childhood . In this 12-minute portrait she tells her story.
Produced for global audiences in 2017, TRUTH BE TOLD ‐ DIRECTOR'S CUT is a feature documentary film about growing up in the Jehovah's Witnesses religion. The title refers to the Jehovah's Witnesses’ perception that their beliefs, and only their beliefs, are "the truth".
In this film, former Jehovah's Witnesses candidly discuss the spiritual, emotional and psychological harm inflicted by the religion. They reveal experiences including the effects of proselytizing door‐to‐door, shunning non‐observant family and friends, suspension of critical thinking, suffering the discouragement of pursuing dreams such as a higher education, and missing other societal holidays and customs.
The film has been well‐received by mental health professionals and world‐famous academics including Harvard Professor Dr. Steven Pinker, Dr. Jim Alcock of York University and renown memoirist Professor Joy Castro of the University of Nebraska‐Lincoln.
Dr. Daniel Dennett of Tufts University wrote, "This look behind the Watchtower is a valuable contribution…" and that TRUTH BE TOLD "is a candid documentary [that] shows enough of the inner workings to serve as a warning." Professor Kipling D. Williams of Purdue University calls TRUTH BE TOLD, "An eye‐opening and heart‐wrenching documentary that immerses us in how it feels to be ostracized by one's family, loved ones, and community."
